Marcus was a visionary statesman, legislator, and a powerful commander of the Roman legions that held the empire’s borders against persistent invasions. But he is best remembered for the sort of personal qualities that transform otherwise mundane souls into saints. What was great about Marcus was that he succeeded in living-in-the-world while refusing to compromise his ideals with the petty obsessions of lesser men, and what made this possible was his philosophy of life: a set of convictions, rationally derived, about how his life should be run by him.
